Daybreakers

Following up from the Spierigs debut effort Undead, Daybreakers was an opportunity to create a unique take on the vampire genre through transformational prosthetics.  The brief was to depict an entire vampire population. Starting with a healthy look, the characters soon became blood deprived, as they started to break down and revert back to their vampire selves.  The transformation was designed over four stages of prosthetic looks.  The Subsiders were the final stage – these were bat like creature that were performers glued into full body prosthetics including wings.

Two time Academy award nominee Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a researcher in the year 2019, when an unknown plague has transformed the worlds population into vampires.  As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

The project provided another opportunity to collaborate with Weta workshop and local Queensland makeup FX artists.

Steve had been attached to the project since 2004 when he was first approached to work on the creature and makeup fx designs for the Subsiders by the Spierig brothers.  Steve was the Makeup FX and Creature Designer for the movie.
